Second Life CD launch Native Intelligence Report

Malume Maruti represents Native Intelligence Report, a brilliant collection of remixes of traditional South African tribal music which will be released on April 6. Irie Vibes will celebrate the CD release on March 22 with a stream of the entire album and coordinated visual images, presented by Destroy Inc at their Saturday dub session. On Monday, March 10 I had a chat with "Uncle" Malume. Here's how the conversation went:
Shandy Stradling: tell me about your involvement in the music scene in South AfricaMalume Maruti: well its been 28 yearsfirst in a record shop after collegethen I had a record label selling Jamaican reggaemainly Don Carlos, Misty in Roots and the Greensleeves catalogueThen I started managing groupsGot interested in studio workDid a crash course in Ohioworked as a live engineer for two years travelling the countryStarted work with RPM studios the the biggest complex in SA for two yearswas a & r for teal record company till 1988, then started Digital CupboardWe (Digital Cupboard) celebrate 20 years this yearShandy Stradling: congratulations :)Malume Maruti: Have worked with nearly all SA top artistsHugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Bayete, the late Lucky DubeSoul Brothers, Blondie, Brenda Fassie, the list is really longShandy Stradling: if readers know anything about music, they will recognize names in that list for sureMalume Maruti: well Hugh and Miriam in particular have a place in music historyI have only worked with them since they returned from exileWe are currently mixing Hugh's new album hereShandy Stradling: I hope to ask you something intelligent about the current social and economic climate in South Africa, but first, I must talk about this music! :)I'm listening to it right now, and you know I've told you I wish the songs were all at least twice as longthere is a range of styles in the Native Intelligence Report: some zydeco, latin rhythms, dance, even swing and house, plenty of reggae, and the whole thing is drenched in dubMalume Maruti: It is really interesting how that happenedShandy Stradling: describe the Native Intelligence Report and how it happenedMalume Maruti: One of the things I do is live Multi Track recordingsI was approached in Dec of 2006 to record a show called Zindala ZombiliLoosely translated, it means the old is equal to the newImagine two bulls in a ring one old and wiseone young and virilethey clash but there is no winnerbefore a challenge of this nature the people would shout Zindala ZombiliAnyway, this is the brand name of a national contest of traditional song and danceThe best female and male groups representing the 11 official languages get together for a singing dancing challengeThis was the source material I used for NIRShandy Stradling: I love the idea of the old meeting the young/new, and the old becoming new, because in some ways, you could say that as young people experience traditional music, it is made new as they hear it and connect with it.Malume Maruti: Yes the whole Zindala Zombili concept is cool especially as I am an old bull fighting in a young bulls world :)Anyway I went through the concert and chose some pieces to work withIt was at this point things took on a life of their ownIn Africa people pay great homage to the ancestorsIt felt to me that a lot of the musicians I have worked with who have passd away came down to help meI can even pinpoint their influenceswierd african voodoo LOLShandy Stradling: when I listen, I feel that I can hear a connection that stretches back through generations - yes, it gives me that feeling, I know it's real :)Malume Maruti: What I was extremely careful to do was to follow the chord progressions and energy of the original melodiesFrom that developed this eclectic mix of styleswhich led me to believe that indeed all music does originate in africaEach song has a life of its own which was presented to meI never set out to make anything in particularShandy Stradling: indeed each piece seems to be couched in studio work that perfectly suits it, while it is in no way overtaking the original sound, just highlighting and enhancing itMalume Maruti: Thank you for those kind words I tried very hard to achieve that so it makes me a little proud that you get it that wayShandy Stradling: this idea of the old and new, this Zindala Zombili, makes me curious about how things are going in South Africa now. Can you tell me something about what it's like and how this music maybe fits, represents, or grows from that? Malume Maruti: Well we are in the middle of a vortex of changevery little stays the same whilst the fundamentals are still in placethe wealth is still mainly in white hands and the power is in Blackwe have fundamental challenges with crime, poverty, aidsat the same time we are experiencing the best economic growth everIt is an exciting place to liveWhich goes with the old chinese curse may you live in interesting times lolMaybe you are getting from me that it is hard to really place where we are at the momentbut i think we remain a miracle nationMusically, I believe it has unbelievable potentialShandy Stradling: I get the sense from what you say, that plenty hangs in the balance, and though the future is uncertain, I believe the spirit of the people is very strong. Those of us in the world who care have great hopes for you.Malume Maruti: Yeah we are a very resillient peopleThey say Africa is not for Sissies lolI dont think the balance is as precarious as say 92 to 94we are really on the positive side of the scale right nowShandy Stradling: as such, the story of South Africa can be a positive light to other nationsMalume Maruti: we who live here think it is the greatest place in the world maybe one day it will beMalume Maruti: It has all the potential9 climatic zonesMeans we can grow everything we need hereShandy Stradling is a fan of growing thingsMalume Maruti: Grapes in the west, oranges in the north, pineapples in the east, sheep in the south and maize in the middle lolbut seriously it has an abundance of resourcesShandy Stradling: woot! we did it! we went all the way geo-political ! :))Malume Maruti: lolI am more than just an engineer lolstudent of life :))Shandy Stradling: it certainly helps to bring all of one's life experiences to the engineering table. Custom Tattoos in SL-By Lovely Encore

Are you the discriminating AV? Are you the type that wants to stand out from all the others? Having a custom body art tattoo is the perfect way to distinguish yourself. OMG…you are totally missing the best, (did you hear me?) the best tattoo artistry in SL!I had the unique opportunity to interview Wullie Craig, co-owner of Destroy, Inc. Now, you know, even in SL there are those AVs that reach “Paris Hilton” levels of fame. I am so not impressed by that level of fame. I am impressed by the level of fame Wullie Craig has reached. His fame was achieved with talent, skill and might I be so bold as to say…ever so mellow personality. In the couple of times I have met him, he has always been calm, polite, and well mellow. A friend introduced him to SL. “When I found {SL} I jumped right in.” As he sat across from me in his studio, he explained “A deep rooted interest in virtual tech I guess I have been waiting for stuff like this for years.” That was a little over a year ago. In the early days of exploring and meeting people, he met Tom Eagle. He and Tom created Destroy, Inc. Now these collaborators hold their SL strategy meetings in real life, which is based in Scotland.Destroy, Inc started out as a small shop, in a mall in SL, selling t-shirts. The shirts gained in popularity because Wullie and Tom were the first to bring reggae culture into SL. OH MON‼ You have got to check out the store now! Wullie and Tom built the store and all the furniture in it. They created all the signs and textures. They have used bold colors in an unobnoxious way. Cause this chic loves to shop, let me tell you, this place is very organized. You can easily find exactly what you want. Not only that, their items are unique, well made and interesting. The best part of the whole store: CUSTOM TATTOOS‼ Wullie adds “We introduced them towards the end of 2006 and they sold well so we made more.” Ooooo, couples, want a truly signature gift for your special someone? Get matching custom tattoos! Don’t know what to give someone? Give them a tattoo! Wullie says the “tattoos on the wall {of the store} are on general sale for a fraction of the custom price.” Are you inked in real life? Proud of your tat? You can have it recreated for your AV. When you go to Destroy, Inc. go to the second floor. There you will find an online order form. The form inquires as to all the requirements of your body art. The form is sent via email to Tom Eagle. Tom and Wullie keep a dialogue with you until all the specs of your tattoo are finalized. Then, you leave ‘em alone to do their magic. “I am tattooed in real life and both Tom and myself have an interest in graphic design outside SL.” Wullie continues: “these tattoos can be very complex and take several weeks to complete.” Using sophisticated graphics programs, such as Photoshop cs3 and other 3D applications, “SL is not the best medium to do this. It has awkward stretches but we have become familiar with these areas and know to avoid them.”When your tattoo is complete, they drop it in your inventory. Keep in mind the more sophisticated your tattoo, for example a full body tattoo will cost more than a simple tribal tat on your lower back. “Our pricing reflects the time scale and skill involved. To be honest, we were asked to do some jobs that no other tattoo studio in SL would touch. When we priced the jobs, one was $200 USD. The customer said no problem go ahead.” That smooth talkin Wullie could charm you into any price. Trust me.Put Destroy, Inc. on your list of places to visit in SL.
